Disc Golf Day at Camden
Riversharks
It was a miserable, gray, drizzly, muggy day at Campbell’s Field in Camden,
NJ; but it wasn’t enough to stop 30+ Disc
Golfers from Sedgley, Tyler, and Rutgers from enjoying disc golf and a distance
competition prior to the Riversharks ballgame on Sunday, July 29th.
The 9-hole course sponsored by the DGA was laid out around
the stadium and along the river with nine DGA Mach Lite
portable baskets. The course was short,
but challenging, and the Delaware River did
swallow a few errant shots but everyone had fun regardless. Not everyone turned in their scorecards, but
we know that Mike Klein shot a 5-under 22 to set the pace, and Steve Braud had an unconfirmed perfect Birdie set with a 9-under 18. The
Riversharks provided some cool merchandise for the top finishers.
Twenty-one disc golfers also tried their hand at the Innova
sponsored distance competition throwing Innova DX Wraiths into a slight
head-wind in the parking lot. The
weather wasn’t ideal with the slick macadam surface underfoot and the wind and
drizzle overhead, but some good distances were still achieved. The top distances were:
Glenn Patterson 444’ 9”
Nick Schneider 405’ 9“
Steve Braud 395“ 11“
Alan Sweeton 390’
BOB Graham 377” 9”
Glenn Patterson took home an Innova Traveler Portable basket
for winning the distance competition - we know Glenn can really chuck a disc -
now he can practice his putting too!
As we wrapped up both competitions around noon, a huge
thunderstorm made it’s way up the river and we were
treated to some spectacular lightning strikes over the city of Camden. The storm brought with it a lot more rain
and the Riversharks 1:05 game time was ultimately pushed
back until 2:10. About 20 of the disc
golfers had purchased picnic tickets but since that area was outside and the
weather was so miserable, our host Jeremy Van Etten
of the Camden Riversharks hooked us up with the indoor, air-conditioned Diamond
Café. (You da
man Jeremy!) We feasted on BBQ chicken, Hamburgers,
Hotdogs, Baked Beans, Potato Salad, etc. etc. and had a great time. After eating, Tom Snyder brought out a cake
and candles and we all sang and toasted Peg Snyder who was celebrating her
birthday!
Jeremy put everyone’s picnic ticket in a hat and drew one to
determine who would throw a ceremonial first pitch for the game. He swore it wasn’t fixed as he drew Big Dog’s
ticket. So with one of the bright blue DGA
Mach Lites setup at home plate, Big Dog stood on the
pitching rubber with the whole crowd watching and tried to make a putt - talk
about pressure! Unfortunately the 50+
foot distance proved to be too much and although dead on-line, the Big Dog’s
putt hit the basket and dropped unceremoniously to the field. The disc golf crowd outside the Diamond Café
all cheered like mad anyway (thanks guys!) as Big Dog left the field and an
eight year old girl behind him threw a perfect strike to give the rest of the
crowd something to cheer about.
We all then cheered as our friend Jeremy sang the National
Anthem as the sun broke threw the clouds– and man oh man can Jeremy sing! He knocked our socks off!
Two innings later the crowd had something else to cheer
about as we really got people wondering what this Disc Golf sport is all
about. Besides the PDGA flyer they
received at the door, they now got to see some distance throws in the
stadium. As soon as the second inning
concluded, our top two distance finishers were brought out on the third base
side near home plate with a chance to make one throw each. As the PA system announced the first
competitor for a disc golf throw, Nick Schneider stepped up and cranked a
line-drive that reached the warning track.
The announcer, the players warming up on the field, and the crowd, were
clearly stunned that Nick had thrown a plastic disc that far. Then, as if scripted in Hollywood, Glenn Patterson stepped up with a
White 175 gram Innova Wraith and as the Diamond Café crew chanted Glenn, Glenn,
Glenn! he calmly, coolly, and seemingly effortlessly, threw the
disc -- out of the ballpark. As the disc
crossed the fence in dead centerfield over the 405 ft. marker the entire
stadium went insane! As we left the field the Road Warrior players in
the third base dugout congratulated Glenn and as he reached his seat he was
being asked for autographs. Throughout
the game, Glenn, Nick, and Bog Dog were asked questions about Disc Golf so our
goal of introducing the sport to folks who had not heard of it was realized.
Despite the lousy weather that hurt attendance, I think the
day was still a success and a good starting point. My thanks to Steve Caffery, Nick Schneider, and Rex Hay for being there early in the morning to help
setup the course. Thanks also to
my wife Ginny and daughter Amber for coming out on a miserable morning and
manning the table for the 9-hole course.
Thanks to Jeremy Van Etten for supporting Disc
Golf and championing this event with the Riversharks organization as well as
for the coffee and donuts in the morning, and the use of the Diamond Café for
the game. And of course, special thanks
to our disc golf family from Sedgley, Tyler, and Rutgers who braved the weather
to come out and support what will hopefully be the first of many annual Disc
Golf Days at Campbell’s Field with the Camden Riversharks – you folks rock!
